Truth is Stranger than Fiction Reading Challenge - Wrap-Up Post

This is a challenge that I am sponsoring, so it's probably good that I finished it.  It'd be terrible to be hanging out forever, uncompleted, in my own challenge.

Here's a list of books I read with links to the reviews:

  1. Crime Beat by Michael Connelly (review here)
  2. Slaves in the Family by Edward Ball (review here)
  3. Bloods by Wallace Terry (review here)
  4. Making Toast by Roger Rosenblatt (review here)
  5. The Perfect Summer by Juliet Nicolson (review here)
  6. Keeping the Feast by Paula Butturini (review here)
  7. Critical Care by Theresa Brown (review here)
  8. In Pharaoh's Army by Tobias Wolff (review here)
Turns out I read a fair amount of non-fiction.  I like it a lot - it's sometimes a nice change from fiction.  Plus I like memoirs, but even more social histories of various kinds and the occasional biography.  I've got more non-fiction on my TBR pile, but this completes this challenge for me.

Standout books from this list are Bloods, Keeping the Feast, and In Pharaoh's ArmyKeeping the Feast is a really sweet little memoir about surviving bad times and the healing powers of food and shared meals.  Bloods and In Pharaoh's Army (Tobias Wolff can just flat write - no question) are both among the best books I've read about the Vietnam War - they go right up there with Dispatches by Michael Herr.

So onwards and ever onwards with the reading.  We'll see which one I finish next!
