Just a quick update for everyone on this challenge. I had originally planned to read the winner and shortlisted books for 1978, however, a check with my library's catalog and the discovery that they don't do
Interlibrary Loan (ah, the joys of an economic recession) reveals that most of those are either out of print or not owned by my library or both. So, since I just finished reading
The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt, I decided I'll read the winner and short-listed books for 2009, instead. So, here is an updated list:
Wolf Hall
by
Hilary Mantel (the 2009 winner)
The Children's Book
by A.S. Byatt
Summertime
by
J.M. Coetzee
The Quickening Maze
by Adam Foulds
The Glass Room
by Simon Mawer
The Little Stranger
by Sarah Waters
Happy reading, everyone!
Well, that's a shame about the availability of the 1978 titles. Some of the older ones can be hard to find, that's for sure. But 2009 was a GREAT year for the Booker shortlist. I've only read Wolf Hall, the winner, but heard very good things about all the nominees.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
I LOVE your selection. OMG...I would be so distraught if our library system stopped interlibrary loan --it's heavily used by me :)
ReplyDeleteFabulous. We are both reading the same set of books. I chose to do these ones too. Your beating me though as you have already read one and I haven't even started. Sorry to hear the others were out of print.Look forward to reading your reviews.
ReplyDelete@Vivienne - it'll be fun to read your reviews! We'll have to link to each other!
ReplyDelete@Diane - I am distraught about the Interlibrary Loan lack, but I get that it's just too expensive for them in the current economy. Since they do a really great job of buying really great books I can't fault them.
